Artimus Pyle Band - Nightcaller (1983)

After the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, the majority of survivors went on to form the Rossington Collins Band. However, drummer Artimus Pyle was not part of that party. I have no idea why. But he didn't sit still either. Artimus formed A.P.B. or the Artimus Pyle band and released two albums in the 80's. "Nightcaller" is the second album. I don''t know the first, so I have no comparison. This album, judging from the fact that the band is an offspring of Skynyrd and geographically came from the right place, had me expecting it might be a classic Southern Rock record. Well... no. It's the kind of 80's drivel we've seen so many great bands produce during the 80's, like 38 Special and Molly Hatchet. This is even poppier. And the fact that more than half the songs are sung by a female singer, with a real clean voice and hardly a knack for Rock & Roll, doesn't help matters at all. And when some guy sings the other half, it sounds like any 80's Arena Rock band. These cats must've been star-struck. Alas they didn't have what it takes to stand out. It's not the worst, I'll just never play it again myself. But if you're interested in the post-crash Lynyrd Skynyrd, like I was, this might satisfy your curiosity. If someone has a good rip of the first A.P.B., I would still like to hear it. As for "Nightcaller, just give it a try.

You make it sound worse than it is. Just finished listening to it, and enjoyed it. Definitely not what most fans of this blog would expect, however it's a good listen if you're a fan of early 80's AOR.

Rossington said Pyle was a coward at the plane crash site. He ran away while the band members were dying. Gary never forgave him.

Rossington is a mean vindictive spiteful drug addict who later begged Artimus for forgiveness down on his knees. Artimus is an ex-Marine. After just having survived a plane crash and bleeding he was lucky to have survived and to actually remain conscious and able to run for help to bring help back to that plane to help save lives. He said in public statements that the only way he was going to save anyone's life was to go and get help. He was in no condition to rescue his former bandmates when he too was going into shock from his minor injuries and buckshot in his shoulder from a scared local farmer defending his wife and children from three bloody men running down his road to his front door. Artimus is lucky to still be alive after car crashes and plane crashes. Gary Rossington knew he was trying to hurt Artimus with those words of calling him a coward but we all know the truth Artimus is no coward and he was not running away from the plane in fear, he was running to get help and to show help where the plane went down and how he made it out of that dark swamp alive. And lead rescuers back to the crash site he did! And then he was loaded up and hauled away to the hospital himself as he began to lose consciousness and go into shock. Artimus was a hero on that day and Gary Rossington knows it and because of VH-1 Uncivil War he sought revenge on Artimus and those words against him by Gary were that revenge he later recanted and begged for forgiveness for having said. Whoever you are that wrote the above comment knows not what they say...
