Joe Sun - Heartbreak Saloon (1998)

You can never have enough Joe Sun music. So, without repeating all the superlatives of previous posts, all I have to say right now is: get it. Great voice, Outlaw Country at its finest. You can't go wrong here. This is Joe Sun doing what he does best: Honky Tonkin' This World Round

Joe Sun - I Ain't Honky Tonkin' No More (1982)

"I Ain't Honky Tonkin' No More", another great album by Outlaw Country hero, Mr. Joe Sun. And thank God he's lying through his teeth. Cause here he is, doin' some serious honky tonkin' alright. This was where Joe started label hopping, cutting this one for Elektra Records. It sounds like a slight attempt to sort of fit the mainstream Country at that time. But that's just a slight attempt, don't you worry. Still plenty of rocking out on this excellent piece of vinyl, nicely concerted for you convenience into a sweet sounding rip. Well, what can I say that I haven't already said in previous Joe Sun posts? The man is one of the finest Outlaw Country singers, making some of the finest Outlaw Country music. And this album is as good as any he's done. Gimme Some Lovin'.

Joe Sun - Out On The Road (1991)

Yup, it's Outlaw Country time again. And thank you, Frank, for supplying us with yet another fine piece of music from Outlaw extraordinaire, Mr. Joe Sun. I guess there's not much new under the sun, but that won't stop me from enjoying Joe's music at all. Any Joe Sun is way above average, and this is more of the same (goodness). Again, if you like your Country with gravelly voice, the music not too slick and songs well written, this is right up your alley. So, here's Joe, hittin' that ol' highway...

Joe Sun - Sundries (2006)

"Sundries" is a collection of unreleased Joe Sun recordings. Thanks to Frank for providing this beaut. Here's the info from the text file: "Tracks 1-4 recorded at the time of the Interchord release. Cuts 5 & 13 recorded by Joe in the mid 80's after he wrote the songs with his lead guitarist of that time Max T Barnes.Track 6 written and recorded in the late 80's. Cuts 7 & 8 were recorded late 80's at a "a" list Nashvuille session. Track 9 witten with Swede Red Jenkins and recorded in 2002. Cuts 10-12 recorded just after the Hank Bogart album. No info' ref track 13. 14 written about his boyhood in Rochester Minnesota and recorded prior to 2006 tour. Album compiled to sell at 2006 UK tour."
Great to get a chance to hear this, otherwise unavailable, music. Like I said before, any Joe Sun is good Joe Sun. And this just proves my point. I ain't crazy!

Joe Sun - The Sun Never Sets (1984)

Another Joe Sun record for ya! "The Sun Never Sets" is as good as any Joe Sun record. The man just won't ever let you down. Then again, neither will he shock you with anything unexpected. But that's just fine by me. So what you get is another classic Outlaw Country album that can hold its own with the best of the genre. I never tire of his beautiful gravelly voice, nor does his Outlaw Country repertoire ever disappoint me. Quality stuff here. And some hot picking as well! Just goes to show, not everything I like the most is bad for me.

Joe Sun - Old Flames (Can't Hold A Candle To You) (1978 )

"Old Flames (Can't Hold A Candle To You)" is Joe Sun's debut album from 1978. And you really can't go wrong with any Joe Sun album, so do not hesitate and do grab this. It's some of the finest Outlaw Country you can lay your hands on. Sterling vocals, peachy songs and some fine picking. Of historical interest: mr. Sun does a cool version of "Long Black Veil", which some might know well from Johnny Cash. On this version, it's preceded with a narration by Danny Dill & Marijohn Wilkin. These two wrote the song and have a nice story to tell on how it became the song it turned out to be. Old flames.

Joe Sun - Hank Bogart Still Lives (1989)

"Hank Bogart Still Lives" is Joe Sun's most Country sounding album. But as Joe himself explains in the liner notes, he had a bit of a theme going on here. Apparently this is the result of a decision to dedicate an album to everything he and his friends loved about the good ol'days, when Hank Williams and Humphrey Bogart were the hottest thing in town. If you know Joe Sun, you'll love this, regardless the theme. If you don't, you may want to check out his "Storms Of Life" album first. I think that's the record that will enthuse Southern Rock fans the most.

If you dug this video ("Jimmy '93", not on the album, though "Jimmy '55" is...), enjoy the sound of The South being born..

Joe Sun - Twilight Zone (1986)

Joe Sun has been going for quite some time, releasing albums since 1978 on several labels. Unfortunately he never received the kind of recognition he deserved. And he does. It's perfect Outlaw Country music, which should also easily please fans of Southern Rock, Americana and Singer-Songwriter music. He has a MySpace page, but it hasn't been updated since a 2005 Christmas single release. But judging from the comments, he's still out there making music.
This album was released in 1986 on the French label Dixie Frog. The music is still the same, though. Still very good. Very Joe Sun. Enter the Twilight Zone...

Joe Sun - Out Of Your Mind (1979)

When this album was released in 1979, Johnny Cash wrote the liner notes, stating that "Joe Sun is the greatest new talent I've heard in twenty years". And it's not hard to figure why Johnny felt that way. Joe Sun has been making some the greatest Outlaw Country in the past twenty years. So, if you haven't already embraced Joe and his music, now's the time.
On this album he sounds a little more laid back than on his "Storms Of Life" album. But the songs are once again beautifully selected and played. Ideal for some late-night reminiscing. And Joe has a great voice, which would make even a mediocre song stand out. Don't hold back, get yours today! Unless you're out of your mind.

Joe Sun - Livin' On Honky Tonk Time (1980)

Joe Sun has made quite a few albums throughout the years, most of them very good. But he's not had the kind of success he should have, based on the quality of his work. The music is pretty much in league with the stalwarts of Outlaw Country music. And if, like me, you love Waylon Jennings and you already have everything released by Shooter Jennings, then this is where you should be. Also, for those of you that don't mind Country in Southern Rock and you don't mind taking it easy now and again, this is your chance to learn that not all Country music is shallow, slick and formulated. Joe's got a terrific voice, created some very tasteful albums, he rocks some and he just should be heard. So there!

Joe Sun - Storms Of Life (1981)

If, besides Southern Rock, you dig Outlaw Country music, you should definitely check out this record by Joe Sun. Though he's usually categorized as being a Country artist, on this album he gets rough and rowdy, and as dirty, vocally, as James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum. Excellent stuff, including a formidable "Folsom Prison Blues" and a neat cover of the Amazing Rhythm Aces' "Ella B". So if you're into Waylon, Hank Jr or Travis Tritt, go get this. Really.
