Don Bowman - Still Fighting Mental Health (1979) & On The Road Too Long (1981)

Alright folks, this is the last I have to offer of my Don Bowman collection. And you get two for the price of one, at no cost at all. "Still Fighting Mental Health" and "On The Road Too Long" are basically the same album, apart from one song. Or two, depending how you look at it. The first one has the song "East Virginia Blues", which the second omits. It's a fairly serious song, actually 'sung', a nice bit of Outlaw Country. The second, instead, has "On The Road Too Long", a spoof on Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again". The rest of the album (we're talking both now) has some of the funniest songs of Don's recorded output. Quite hilarious is "Dear Fred", about a guy handling affairs for his friend in prison. Who needs enemies with friends like that? I mentioned Willie Nelson, and you can hear him do quite some harmonies hroughout the album.

"Coward At The Alamo" from "Fresh From The Funny Farm" and "Hello D.J" from "The All New Don Bowman" we already knew in the bleeped versions. Well, here they are again, both bleeped and un-bleeped. Go wash that mouth with soap, Don! And one of the highlights is Don, with Willie and Waylon Jennings harmonizing, singing his biggest hit that never was, "Willon And Waylee". That's all folks. If you have more Don Bowman, let me know. List-in to this!

Don Bowman - The All New Don Bowman (1972)

Don Bowman again, at his very zaniest. "The All New Don Bowman" is one of Don's funniest albums and it introduces the magnificent drunk, Farley McCluth. On "Hello D.J. Don throws a tantrum for not getting his record played on the radio, calling up the D.J. time and again and getting nastier along the way. There's a remake of his classic hit, "Chit Akins Make Me A Star" and it has song titles like "The Monkey Who Became President" and "Freddie Four Toes". Well, just list-in! List-in to this! Poetic justice?

Don Bowman - Whispering Country (1970)

On "Whispering Country" funny man Don Bowman has taken up the task of butchering 'Whispering' Bill Anderson's repertoire. And trust Don to do a thorough job at that. Even in an effort to keep things 'clean', there's enough here to raise an eyebrow or two. Guess I'll go somewhere and find myself a sheep...

Don Bowman - Support Your Local Prison (1969)

"Support Your Local Prison" is Don Bowman at his very best. Again. This time the theme is prison and Don's sure taking the p**s out of all that heavy s**t. Like "The Top Ten" in which an elderly couple is musing kindheartedly, while looking at a picture of their only son, who just made it to number one in the top ten. The top ten of the most wanted criminals list, that is. This also features a truly hilarious version of "Folsom Prison Blues" and his hit song, "Poor Old Ugly Gladys Jones", featuring Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Bobby Bare. And then there's a 18 minute long parody on the Arlo Guthrie song "Alice's Restaurant". You might as well get high on that. As a bonus I've included a single with the tracks "Another Puff" and, Don looking back on how he got so big to begin with, "I Owe It All To You Chit Akins". Just list-in!..

Don Bowman - Funny Folk Flops (1968)

Yep, it's Don again. This time Don has it in for the 60's Folk scene. Or maybe one might consider this to be a comprehensive allyouneedtoknowguide on how to become a successful Folk artist. Just listin to this. And introducing us to the world's foremost folksinging trumpet player and greatest folksinging gargler, mr. Bowman supplies us once again with about half an hour of sheer nonsense. I guess you shouldn't want to talk about Don Bowman too much. Let him do the talking (and the 'singing') every now and then, to put a smile on your face. He's deserved it, cause obviously the man has always been under a great amount of pressure. As he claims to have been. It's been messin' up his mind...

Don Bowman - From Mexico With Laughs (1967)

Crazy man Don Bowman again. Mexican style. He must've figured, since Herb Alpert was cashing in on the Mexican vibe in the 60's, that he could make a good buck too? Well... Let's just say, Don isn't exactly Herb. Thank god. But it gets funny alright. I have included the b-side of the "Tijuana Drum And Bugle Corps" single, a song called "Little Leroy", as a bonus track. Laugh!

Don Bowman - Recorded Almost Live (1967)

A little more zany stuff for all you corn heads out here. "Recorded Almost Live" is album number four by Country Comedian Don Bowman. Another fine slice of absurdities, the kind of silliness Don excels in. Like Don insisting his buddy should fight the man hitting on his woman, since he himself can't stand the sight of blood, on "Let's You And Him Fight". Added as a bonus to this rip is a single he recorded with Skeeter Davis, "For Loving You" backed with "Baby It's Cold Outside". Jimminie Cricket...

Don Bowman - Funny Way To Make An Album (1966)

This is Don Bowman's third album, and it's one of my favorites. This features the hilarious "The Other Ringo","I Get The Feeling We're Through","Boll Weevil Air Lines" and "Things Are Looking Up", the latter being one of the funniest drunk songs. And Don's in touch with his feminine side too, assuming the role of sister on "Dear Sister". But I don't think I should talk too much about Don, he should be laughed at. So, let the funny man do the slurring...

Don Bowman - Fresh From The Funny Farm (1965)

In case you were wondering, yes, I'm gonna post all Don Bowman albums. A little smile occasionally won't hurt nobody. And a good friend of mine really wants this bad. So.
"Fresh From The Funny Farm" is Don's second album. No Rock here, just Country Comedy. And when Don gets plastered, he's the funniest. I don't know very much about Don. I guess he's had two careers, one as a Country Comedian, the other as DJ. You can read about Don here.
Don about his frequent visits at the farm: "Getting in was not the problem..."

Don Bowman - Our Man In Trouble (1964)

Well, it's April Fools' Day. So, I won't kid you any longer and admit that this post is really just a joke. A mighty funny one though. That is, if you like Comedy. And old-time Country Comedy at that. And even though I'm not all that crazy about that zany, corny 60's Comedy stuff, I do have a soft spot for Don Bowman.
I learned about Don because I really dig Waylon Jennings a lot. And Don Bowman used to be a DJ in Lubbock, like Waylon. And he co-wrote "Just To Satisfy You", which was an old hit of Waylon's. And probably just about the only serious thing he ever did.
Don Bowman records are funny. But if you think there might be some worthwhile music on this too, think again. Don Bowman is the World's Worst Picker. Even if he was endorsed by Chit Akins. That'll never sell records!
