Ian Moore - Modernday Folklore (1995)

"Modernday Folklore" was Ian Moore's last album for the resurrected Capricorn label. It was also his last Southern Rock album. At least, that's from what I read, since I haven't actually heard anything from Ian's subsequent output. But I have listened to this album pretty often. And it still gets rotation from time to time. It's a bit of an odd record. I guess on this album he was already making the transition from Southern Blues Rock to the well crafted Pop(?) songs of his later work. But this is really good. As a matter of fact, this has his best song (imho), a tune called "Muddy Jesus". There are some songs which recall his Bluesier past, but the majority on this album is, I guess, Southern Rock with a twist. Sometimes reminiscent to Chris Whitley in atmosphere and a quite adventurous listening experience. All songs are very well written. It may not necessarily grab you by the throat at first listen, but give it a few spins and you will find the material definitely grows on you. And as always, great playing and more than pleasant vocals. No mindless Texas Boogie boredom here, just good stuff. Modernday folklore!

Ian Moore - Live From Austin (1994)

"Live From Austin" was Ian Moore's second release. And a hot live one at that. Running at around 35 minutes and just 5 songs, this is still very much worth your attention. Bluesy Southern Rock played with verve and passionate vocals to boot. If you enjoyed Ian Moore's first album, you'll find this is where he really gets the chance to show off. And do that with flying colors. Great tasty live record, this one. Recommended for sure. Satisfied...

Ian Moore - Ian Moore (1993)

Ian Moore drew my attention at the time because he was signed to the revived Capricorn label. Since Capricorn Records was, at one time, major provider of Southern Rock, I was sure to keep a close eye on any new Capricorn release. Whereas a lot of those new acts weren't exactly Southern Rock, I thought Ian Moore came pretty close. Ian was an Austin, Texas axe slinger, compared a lot to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Blasphemous or no, I never cared much for the albums made by Stevie Ray. And I don't think the comparison holds very well. Ian's music is much less bluesy, much more rocking and much more song oriented. The guy sure can play, and sings quite attractively as well. Sturdy, bluesy Southern Rock, slightly out of left field. He made two more records for Capricorn and then Capricorn collapsed yet again. Ian has been making music ever since, though he changed his style profoundly. Of course that is from what I've read about it, since I have yet to hear any of the albums after his third, "Modernday Folklore". But be sure to check this out if you haven't heard of Ian Moore. You'll be glad you did. Not In Vain...
